When I use DisplayLink plugable usb-c docking station, I have to connect the display directly to the macbook for it to use the external display as the main display (mirror).
If I connect the display to the docking station, mac treats that as an extended display and uses the macbook's screen as the main display.
Looks like DisplayLink also has a case with Mac on this.
DisplayLink's own bug is tracked under ID 33650324. Apple's internal defect number for this issue is ID 26394372.
